Best places to ski this week
If you’re going to the Alps, head high or stick to shady slopes is the advice this week following a rise in temperatures, which means south-facing lower slopes are starting to get slushy.
However, January’s heavy snowfall has ensured there’s still some good skiing across the region and skiers this week will enjoy mostly sunny skies with the possibility of light snowfall overnight on Thursday.
In Austria, conditions are excellent thanks to a dusting of fresh snow last weekend. St Anton and St Christoph received the best of it.
In France, the resorts in the Three Valleys, including Courchevel, Meribel and Val Thorens, and Espace Killy region, especially Val d’Isere and Tignes, have some of the best conditions. Skiing in the southern French Alps has also improved.
In Italy, no fresh snow at the weekend means little has changed. The Aosta Valley continues to offer the best of the current conditions and it might get some more snow on Thursday.
Conditions are similar across the Pyrenees, with spring-like snow to be found lower down due to the rising temperatures. That said, almost every lift was operating early this week and most runs were well groomed. The best place in the Pyrenees is Baqueria-Beret in Spain, which had a 50cm dump last week.
In Bulgaria, piste conditions are very good, especially high up, and there is still some untracked off-piste snow.
In Switzerland, light snowfall over the weekend has improved conditions at several resorts, especially in the Jungfrau Region and further east towards the Austrian border. Murren and Sannaun caught 5cms.
Western Norway is due to get some more snow later this week and conditions throughout Scandinavia are pretty good.
In the US there has been lots of fresh snow, with Utah receiving as much as 60cms, so conditions in Snowbird are excellent. Further north, more great skiing is to be had at Big Sky, Jackson Hole and Timberline and in California there are good conditions in Mammoth and Squaw Valley and a big storm is expected to sweep in by the end of the week. More snow is also expected n Utah, Colorado and Wyoming this week, while the east coast will get some lighter snow.
In Canada, British Columbia has seen the best of the recent snow fall, with snow packs across the regions seeing significant gains over the weekend. Fernie saw around 19cm of fresh snow on Sunday which has ensured that conditions remain excellent across the entire mountain. The snow doesn’t look likely to let up anytime soon with light snow forecast throughout much of the week ahead. Whistler will see the heaviest of this, with 42cm expected throughout Wednesday.
