Patrick Delatour – Minister of Tourism
Haiti was alive and exhibiting at ITB Berlin. With the support of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation CTO, ITB Berlin and Rhino Design there was a special booth where Haiti, represented by the Haitian Embassy in Berlin, demonstrated its strong will to survive.
In addition there were workshops focussing on “Development perspectives through sustainable tourism in Haiti” with the contribution of H.E. Jean-Robert Saget, Ambassador of Haiti to Germany, the GTZ (German Technical Cooperation) and the CTO.
All around the exhibition, Haiti events were taking place including this year’s ITB-Charity-Campaign, which was dedicated to support the victims of the disastrous earthquake and reconstruction of Haiti (instead of collecting money for an aid project of the ITB Berlin Partner Country 2010 Turkey – which waived its privilege in favour of Haiti).
You could even get a massage to help – at Heaven Sent Nation (HSN) relaxation space with 10 min. massage was giving with 10% of their profits to HAITI.
The big news was the last minute attendance of the Haiti Minister of Tourism who was flown in to talk about the cooperation between UNWTO, the Caribbean Tourism Organisation and Jamaica to get Haiti back on the road to tourism development.
At an ITB press conference, Patrick Delatour, Haiti’s Minister of Tourism, shared a panel with UNWTO General Secretary Taleb Rifai, South Africa Minister of Tourism Marthinus van Schalkwyk, and press attaché Marcelo Risi.
The minister confirmed that his earthquake-torn country is to return to the development envisaged in the tourism masterplan as soon as possible using tourism as one of the methods of economic and social reconstruction.
