The body of a man thought to be a British tourist has been found wrapped in a carpet inside a plastic bag dumped in a market in New Delhi.
The body, believed to be that of Andrew Raymond Rodick, 40, was found on Sunday morning. A Foreign Office spokesman said "We are in touch with the Indian authorities and providing consular assistance to the family."
The Times of India reported that the man’s hands and legs were tied. Rodick was identified through a badly soiled passport recovered from his pocket.
Initial investigations suggested he died of multiple injuries inflicted by a blunt object on his head and face. Delhi police are carrying out a murder investigation.
The body was found by security guards and was in an advanced state of decomposition, police officials said. An examination found multiple cuts, bruising and, according to one source, cigarette burn marks that could indicate torture before death.
Bhogal market in Nizamuddin, south Delhi, where the body was found, is a commercial area close to mixed residential neighbourhoods. Police were yesterday questioning local guesthouse owners.
Investigators told the Times of India that Rodick had arrived in India two months ago on a tourist visa and had visited Chennai, Mumbai and Goa before moving on to Delhi.
