A Hong Kong-bound flight was forced into an emergency landing in China after a bomb threat was issued.

Hong Kong Airlines flight HX337 carrying 295 people from Beijing was diverted to Wuhan after the airline received a bomb threat shortly after take-off.

After landing at Wuhan, all passengers and crew were deplaned while police swept the plane but no suspicious packages were discovered.

“Hong Kong Airlines was notified of a suspected bomb threat on board flight HX337 from Beijing to Hong Kong, after the plane had taken off,” an airline spokeswoman confirmed on Tuesday.

The captain chose to divert the plane “in order to ensure the safety and security of the passengers and crew” the airline said.

The exact nature of the bomb threat has not been disclosed.

The plane was cleared to resume service after a short time but the current flight crew were by this time out of hours, meaning passengers were delayed by several more hours waiting for a replacement crew.
