Booking surge expected if PCR tests are scrapped
Package holiday prices to Spain this September or October have dropped by as much as 38% according to holiday price comparison site TravelSupermarket.
September and October package holidays to the Costa de Almeria which includes resorts such as Aguadulce, Mojacar Pueblo, Roquetas de Mar and Vera, are down an average 38% compared with 2019, while the Costa Dorada have fallen, on average 27%, it says.
Breaks to Majorca are, on average 15% cheaper.
Some destinations have risen in price, which reflects the differing travel restrictions in place.
"The cost and administration surrounding testing is still proving a major barrier to people travelling. With fewer people holidaying compared with pre-pandemic, there are holidays available from the UK to the Spanish Costas in September and October from as little as under £150pp for seven nights," said Emma Coulthurst from TravelSupermarket.
Coulthurst says prices have increased to Malta and to the UAE ‘where good weather is pretty much guaranteed at this time of year.’
This is due to other popular winter sun destinations such as Cancun, the Dominican Republic and Turkey remaining on the red list.
"Many travel companies are trying to extend the season to make up for the lack of opportunity to travel at the beginning of the summer in May, June and early July. If the UK Government announces, as anticipated, that PCR testing is being scrapped, we expect a surge in interest for late summer and October," she added.
TravelSupermarket says the Spanish Costas, Majorca, Zante, The Algarve and Corfu are the best value destinations this September and October based on the average price differences compared to 2019.
