Boy pulled from Anthem of the Seas pool has died
An eight-year-old boy who fell into a swimming pool on Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas cruise ship has died in hospital.
The New York City medical examiner’s office said Prince Adepoju of Maryland died of ‘accidental drowning’ on July 2.
The boy was pulled from the swimming pool unresponsive and airlifted to a hospital in Staten Island just hours after Anthem of the Seas left Bayonne Port in New Jersey.
"The cause of death is drowning, with contributing condition of seizure disorder. The manner of death is accidental," a spokeswoman for the medical examiner’s office said.
The boy was in the water for up to 10 minutes before he was found, coast guard senior chief Steven Allard told The New York Daily News.
The boy was treated by the ship’s medical team as the ship altered its course and returned to port and he remained on life support until he passed away two days later.
"We are heartbroken to learn the news of his passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this terribly sad time," Royal Caribbean said in a statement.
