Brazil offers extra flight capacity for World Cup
Brazil national airline regulator ANAC has announced it will grant requests for almost 2,000 extra flights to cope with World Cup demand during June and July.
Brazilian carriers such as Gol and TAM had demanded the right to run extra flights in the face of strong criticism recently for the sharp rise in air fares for World Cup destinations.
In total, an extra 1,973 temporary slots will be made available to airlines for the duration of the World Cup.
"We will grant all the requests. The system has the capacity to handle these new flights," said head of ANAC Marcelo Guaranys.
Although this increase only represents around 1% of the Brazilian air network, it will significantly ease pressure on rising air fares.
In early January carriers Azul and Avianca Brasil vowed to cap prices for domestic flights during the World Cup.
The airline industry has been forced to cut routes and lay off staff in recent years due to falling exchange rates and high fuel costs.
Host cities are spread out throughout the country making air travel the only viable means of transport for an expected 3.6 million fans.
In related news, hoteliers in Rio de Janeiro have agreed to cap prices for hotel rooms during the World Cup to a level typically charged during New Year holidays.
