BREAKING NEWS: BA to add fuel surcharge to flights
STOP PRESS: NEWS RECIEVED 11.20am TUESDAY
British Airways will add £2.50 per flight sector (£5 return trip) as a separate fuel surcharge to its fares in the UK with effect from Thursday, May 13, as a result of the rising price of oil. The fuel surcharge applies to all fares sold across the British Airways’ global network. In all markets outside of the UK a surcharge of $4 USD per
flight sector will be added.
The Australian flag-carrier Qantas has reportedly added a fuel surcharge to its fares, to maintain its profits in the face of soaring oil prices.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the airline will as AUD6 to domestic flights and AUD15 to international flights, with the surcharges taking effect in a week’s time.
The carrier has blamed the increases on the fact that jet fuel is currently 60 per cent more expensive than it was a year ago, with crude oil prices reaching a 13-year high earlier this month.
The BBC News website reports that other carriers including British Airways and SAS are considering following suit but that they are yet to make a final decision on the matter.
