Brightline gets the OK for PortMiami rail link
Florida private rail operator Brightline has got the green light to build a station at PortMiami, offering a more seamless, car-free ride to a cruise vacation.
The Miami-Dade County Commission gave the go-ahead for the PortMiami rail station which is expected to open next year.
Brightine, which is soon to be rebranded as Virgin Trains USA, connects downtown Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, with an extension to Orlando International Airport expected to be completed by 2022.
"This is a first-of-its-kind train to port station that will connect the cruise capital of the world with a car-free option for millions of cruisers looking to start their vacation a little earlier." said Patrick Goddard, President of Virgin Trains.
"This is a tremendous partnership and infrastructure investment between PortMiami, Miami Dade County and Brightline that will increase mobility."
It will become the first rail service directly connecting an international airport with a cruise ship terminal.
"This private-public partnership is a great opportunity to expand PortMiami’s connectivity to visitors traveling from central Florida and for Miami-Dade County residents to get to the Orlando area in a quick, enjoyable way," said Miami-Dade County mayor Carlos A. Gimenez.
Brightline has also been given approval for an additional stop in Aventura, and is in discussions with the city of Boca Raton to build a station.
