A British woman has been shot after she and her family mistakenly drove into a Brazilian favela.
The family had been heading the coastal resort of Angra dos Reis, 90 miles from Rio de Janeiro, but got lost.
They were reportedly looking for somewhere to buy water when they ended up in Agua Santa community, an area known to have drug traffickers.
They were approached by a group of armed men and shot at after not understanding orders to leave the area.
The woman, who was travelling with her partner and three children, was shot twice in the abdomen and is lucky to be alive, according to doctors.
She is being treated in hospital.
The rest of the family was unhurt.
The Foreign Office confirmed: "We are in touch with the local authorities in Angra dos Reis, Brazil, following reports of the shooting of a British national."
