Brussels Airlines forced to operate 3,000 ‘ghost’ flights
Brussels Airlines says it is being forced to operate about 3,000 empty or under-capacity flights through the end of March just to maintain its landing slots.
Belgium’s transport minister, Georges Gilkinet wrote to the European Commission urging it to further loosen the slot rules which were relaxed to 50%, down from 80% before the pandemic.
Brussels Airlines’ parent Lufthansa recently said it expects to run 18,000 ‘pointless flights’ this winter in order to keep its landing slots.
