A suicide bomber detonated device as he was shot by police in Central Station’s main concourse.
A British women was amongst the members of public warned to flee by the police before the explosion.
No-one was injured, other than the bomber.
The Foreign Office amended its travel advice for Belgium last night, saying: "The British Embassy is in contact with local authorities and urgently seeking further information. You should remain vigilant, avoid the immediate area and follow the advice of the local security authorities."
The attack comes a little over a year after suicide bombers carried out synchronised terror attacks on Brussels Airport and on the metro in the city centre.
