BTC surveys travel management reaction to terror threat

The Business Travel Coalition is asking travel management companies and corporate travel managers to share their reactions to the terror threat that caused US embassy closings across the Middle East this weekend.

Results of the poll will be published today at 2 pm.

An intercepted message between senior al Qaeda officials has resulted in a travel alert for Americans planning to travel overseas, particularly in the Middle East, that will remain in effect for the rest of August.

The State Department yesterday afternoon said that 19 diplomatic posts will remain shuttered through Saturday, in part because of the looming celebrations marking the end of the Ramadan period of fasting for Muslims and in part out of "an abundance of caution."

Sen. Saxby Chambliss, Georgia Republican and ranking member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, said on NBC’s "Meet the Press" that the danger was "the most serious threat that I’ve seen in the last several years."

The Business Travel Coalition has developed a brief survey to help companies understand the steps other organizations are considering taking with regard to adjusting their employee travel policies. The survey is available at http://btcnews.co/13xSLm3.

BTC will publish preliminary results this afternoon, and take additional surveys "as developments warrant."

BTC also noted that the terror threat "underscores a fundamental problem with the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Resolution 787," in that having multiple airlines sitting on pieces of the PNR in their respective systems could place travelers in harm’s way.
