Bumper year for Tenerife
Visitor arrivals from the UK to Tenerife are set to top 2 million in 2016 for the first time.
Over 1.55 million visitors from the UK travelled to Tenerife between January to September 2016, representing a 19.9% jump over last year.
The rise comes as tourism in other winter sun destinations, like Egypt’s Sharm el Sheik and Tunisia, is affected by the Government’s travel advice.
The UK market accounts for 36.9% of all visitors to Tenerife.
Carlos Alonso, president of the Tenerife Island Government, said he is confident the growth will continue into next summer, boosted by an increase in air capacity and the launch of new routes.
Five new UK-Tenerife routes have launched for this winter: Manchester (Vueling and Norwegian), Birmingham (Vueling), Newcastle (Ryanair) y Belfast (Ryanair) – alongside the new weekly service with Thomson Airways from Humberside Airport.
Meanwhile, the Irish market has also performed well, with a total of 73,001 visitors from Ireland travelling to Tenerife from January to September 2016, up 19.2% over the same period in 2015.
In total, Tenerife welcomed 4,212,827 worldwide visitors in the first nine months of 2016, a 9.2% upsurge on the previous year.
