Business travellers stay close to home
Business travel makes up 16% of all long distance trips in the US, according to a study by the US Bureau of Transportation (BTS), but most travel less than 250 miles.
The study, called “America on the Go…US Business Travel,” found that more than 405 million long-distance business trips take place in the US each year. Four out of five of those trips are done by car. Three out of four trips involve travelling less than 250 miles.
The joint study conducted by the BTS in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) suggests the average one-way travel distance for a business trip is 123 miles. Air travel accounts for 16% of all business travel.
The report profiles the typical business traveler as male (77% of business trips); between the ages of 30 and 49; employed in a professional, managerial, or technical field; with a household income of more than $75,000. The study interviewed a nationally representative sample of 60,000 people.
