California may ban Clear skip the line airport security screening
The Clear expedited airport security screening service could be outlawed in California.
Clear allows travelers to skip the line for express screening for a $189 annual fee.
A proposed bill by state lawmakers wants to prohibit a two-tier system.
The SB-1372 bill proposed by state Senator Josh Newman would bar Clear from operating in California airports.
It doesn’t impact the federal TSA PreCheck expedited security screening program.
“It’s a basic equity issue when you see people subscribed to a concierge service being escorted in front of people who have waited a long time,” Newman said.
“Everyone is beaten down by the travel experience, and if Clear escorts a customer in front of you and tells TSA, ‘Sorry, I have someone better,’ it’s really frustrating.”
Newman says Clear would not be banned itself, just the paid for priority service it offers.
“We are proud to partner with nine airports across California and serving nearly one million Californians,” Clear said.
Although Clear helps its subscription travelers skip the initial ID check line, it doesn’t offer the same expedited service as TSA PreCheck which allows laptops to stay in bags and travelers to keep shoes on.
The bill is set to have its first Sate senate reading today at the California Transportation Committee.
