Twice-weekly ...Read moreEasyJet launching new Manchester route to Akureyri, North Iceland - News & announcementsEasyJet is adding a second route from the UK to Akureyri in North Iceland. Twice-weekly Akureyri flights will launch from Manchester from November 12, 2024. The announcement follows the success of the existing London Gatwick to Akureyri flights launched last winter. The Gatwick route will also return for winter 2024/25. Flights will operate on Saturdays and Tuesdays from both Manchester and London Gatwick airports. Brits make up the highest number of visitors to North Iceland during the winter season. In recent years, efforts have been made to establish direct international flights through Akureyri and Egilsstaðir as part of the Nature Direct project in cooperation with Visit Iceland, Isavia, Visit North Iceland and Austurbrú. This collaboration and momentum have contributed to easyJet's decision to now fly to Akureyri from two airports in the UK next winter. Guests will touch down at the expanded Akureyri Airport, which is currently undergoing terminal expansion. "EasyJet flights from London to Akureyri have been very successful, and soon after they started, we began working with our partners to secure flights to more destinations," says Arnheiður Jóhannsdóttir, MD of North Iceland Marketing Office. "It is gratifying that the decision to offer flights from Manchester was made immediately following a good first winter for easyJet here in North Iceland." EasyJet is the only airline offering a direct connection between the UK and Northern Iceland. "We are delighted to launch a second route this winter," says Ali Gayward, easyJet's UK country manager. "We are committed to supporting the development of tourism in Iceland." Chris Hagan, UK Representative for Visit North Iceland added: "The addition of twice weekly Manchester flights this coming winterwill allow both UK operators and agents to capitalise on the opportunity to showcase North Iceland." The company announced a succession plan with chief financial officer, Kenton Jarvis set to take over. The transition takes place on 1 January 2025. Lundgren will stay on until mid-May to ensure an ‘orderly’ succession. Lundgren joined from TUI and became CEO of easyJet in 2017. “Johan has done an excellent job as our CEO steering the company through the immense challenges of the Covid period, and setting up a clear strategy and strong execution plan,” said chairman Stephen Hester. “There is good positive momentum and Johan will be with us to close out the current year.” The move was revealed as easyJet gave a trading update for the six months to the end of March. Easyjet said it has sold more than three-quarters of seat capacity for the current quarter to the end of June and 40% are sold for the July to September period. Tour operator Easyjet Holidays will likely generate £170m of profit before tax, it says. Overall, the company business is still on track to meet its target of over £1bn in pre-tax profit. “Our two newest bases, Alicante and Birmingham, are achieving passenger numbers well above the network average and we have announced a tenth UK base at London Southend from next March,” Lundgren said.Related News Stories:
