Campaigners says perfume and wine containers could be lethal weapons

The campaign group HACAN Clear Skies has called on the Government to ban glass bottles of wine and perfume on flights, because they could be used as lethal weapons by terrorists.

According to the online news provider Ananova, the group’s chairman John Stewart is claiming the only reason glass bottles are not banned is because there are huge profits involved, and says all such containers should be transported in the hold.

He added: “Our members live directly under the Heathrow flight path and therefore feel any terrorist attack could affect them directly. We are calling on airports to do anything they can to minimise this threat. Someone can smash a bottle on a plane and cut people’s throats with glass – we are calling on airports and the Government to think very carefully as to whether bottles should be brought on board.”

A spokesman for the Department of Transport told Ananova: “It is a question of balance between security and the convenience of passengers.”
