Canada is cracking down on errant drone operators.

Transport Canada is tightening rules again, requiring drone pilots to take an online exam and obtain a pilot’s certificate.

New regulations take effect on June 1.

It applies to drones over 25 kilograms in weight and for all operators, whether hobbyists, for commercial use or for research purposes.

There are different regulations for basic and advanced drone operation, with a minimum age limit of 14 and 16 respectively.

The advanced operation relates to flying in controlled airspace, and over or within 30 meters of bystanders.

Drones must be registered with Transport Canada.

Flying must be at least 5.6 kilometers from airports.

Operators violating rules can be fined $3,000 as an individual or up to $15,000 for a business.
