Canada introducing mandatory temperature screening at airports

Sunday, 15 Jun, 2020 0

Canada is making temperature screening checks mandatory for all airline passengers.

It will have a phased start with pre-departure checks for all travelers entering Canada by June 30.

By the end of July Montréal, Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver Airports will have temperature screening checkpoints which are the only airports offering international flights.

The third phase kicks in by September 2020 which will see pre-departure temperature checks by the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority for domestic travelers at airports including Québec City, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, and Edmonton.

"We have already introduced measures to reduce the risk of the spread of Covid-19, including mandating face coverings, and publishing health guidance for the air industry. Mandatory temperature screenings are yet another measure in our multi-layered approach," said transport minister Marc Garneau.

Garneau said if a traveler is deemed to have a fever they will be rechecked 10 minutes later.

If the second check still shows a fever they will be denied travel and may try again after 14 days.

"That’s an arbitrary but prudent amount of time. We’re working with the airlines, the intention is that the rebooking would not be more expensive but just be a rebooking to a different date," the minister said.
