The terminal at Cardiff Airport is to be redeveloped in time for summer 2010.
Work is due to start in October with the redevelopment of the front of the terminal and approach areas.
The arrivals and departures halls will be linked into one large common area with new food and retail services, and presented through more contemporary design.
It is planned that this stage of redevelopment will be completed in time for next summer, well in advance of the Ryder Cup to be held in Wales in October 2010.
The name ‘Cardiff Airport’ and ‘Maes Awyr Caerdydd’ will replace Cardiff International Airport from today following a brand reviewand consultation.
The name will be accompanied by a new visual identity and logo.
Managing director Patrick Duffy said: “The airport will benefit from this investment which will present a more discerning image domestically and internationally and provide a backdrop to continue to deliver high standards of service for passengers. It is also important to clearly align the airport’s brand with its Welsh location.”
He added: “These plans demonstrate the airport’s commitment to being part of a wider strategy for Wales. We want to see our facilities being used by more airlines offering more choice to both Welsh patrons and visitors to Wales.
"However, the ultimate drivers of growth for Cardiff Airport will be airlines responding to increased economic performance in South Wales and increased visibility of Wales internationally. These are issues which can only be addressed as part of wider economic policy and industrial development in Wales.
"This is just the start of our new approach and we hope to announce more positive news in the coming months.”
