Caribbean cruises rerouted as Tropical Storm Franklin makes landfall
Flights were grounded and Caribbean cruises rerouted as Tropical Storm Franklin made landfall on the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
Cruise lines had taken no chances and altered Caribbean cruise itineraries in the region.
Carnival Celebration has rerouted away from calls to Amber Cove and Puerto Plata.
MSC Seascape also postponed its Dominican Republic call.
American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, have already issued travel advisories and fee waivers.
Flights to Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, Santiago and Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic are affected.
It also impacts flights to Providenciales International Airport in Turks and Caicos where the storm is expected to pass over next.
Franklin made landfall Wednesday on Hispaniola, shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti, dumping heavy rain.
Forecasters predict as much as 16 inches of rainfall in the D.R. with less in Haiti.
Several hundred people were evacuated from their homes to higher ground in the Dominican Republic, and at least three village communities were cut on by flood waters.
About 125,000 people in the Dominican Republic reside in areas ‘extremely vulnerable to landslides and flash floods’ the UN World Food Program said
“Haiti is among the most vulnerable countries in the world when it comes to the effects of extreme weather,” it added.
East of the D.R., Puerto Rico is being impacted to a lesser extent.
Rescue crews are searching for two scuba divers who went missing off the Puerto Rico coast due to heavy seas impacted by the storm.
