Caribbean favoured for Christmas – Opodo poll
More than one in two of people would rather go abroad than spend a traditional UK Christmas with friends and family, a survey shows.
The Caribbean is the favourite overseas destination to spend Christmas, while Sydney and New York were favoured over London for celebrating new year.
The Opodo poll amongst more than 4,000 subscribers to the online travel company’s newsletter revealed that while 43% take a break around Christmas specifically for festive shopping, only 19% of those surveyed shopped in the UK with the rest prepared to travel abroad to find the gifts they are looking for. New York is the most favoured city break destination this Christmas, overtaking last year’s favourite Amsterdam.
Opodo UK country manager Neil Mott said: “These survey results show the importance of travel in our lives and with such reasonable travel offers available over the Christmas period, more people than ever before are being tempted into going abroad to do their Christmas shopping.”
Top 5 Opodo locations for the 2006 Christmas season:
- New York
- Prague
- Paris
- Amsterdam
- Rome
