Caribbean Tourism Conference opens
The 30th Caribbean Tourism Conference opened in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Saturday.
The conference, organised by the Caribbean Tourism Organisation, has a theme for 2007 of “The Next Generation: Learning from the Past, Preparing for the Future”.
The conference will gather more than 800 travel industry professionals from the Caribbean, Latin America, US, Canada and Europe to exchange ideas, identify business opportunities, establish plans and develop strategies that will lead to further tourism development.
Puerto Rico itself has taken the opportunity to showcase its own tourism and conference facilities.
Visitor numbers to the island continue to rise due to its mix of authentic Latin culture, cuisine, natural heritage and history. This is despite a backdrop of an overall drop in numbers to the Caribbean as a whole.
At the conference, Puerto Rico announced the first ever PGA golf tournament to be staged at the Tom Kite-designed Coco Beach course on March 17-23, 2008.
*The CEO of Air Jamaica Michael Conway has resigned.
Conway’s contract with the airline offered the option to resign his position if the government of Jamaica and therefore the ownership of the airline changed within his contract period.
The government did change during recent elections and Conway decided to exercise his option.
New chairman of the board Shirley Williams will assume a larger executive role until a new CEO is appointed.
