Caribbean tourism product in decline?
A top Caribbean tourism official has warned that the area’s tourist quality could be in decline unless more attention is paid to sustainability and excellence.
Sir Royston O. Hopkin, Chairman of the Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism, warned of several recent reports describing a decline in resources.
Three separate reports concluded that unless the Caribbean tourism industry pays urgent attention to the accelerated deterioration of terrestrial and marine ecosystems, tourism quality and product would suffer. The reports also warned that the competitiveness of the area in the world tourism market could also suffer.
“Human resources are the key to achieve protection of the environment,” said Mr Hopkin.
He said his organization would continue in 2005 to raise awareness of the issue.
