Carnival ship changing name and shedding skin

Thursday, 20 Mar, 2012 0

In what some are calling one of the most dramatic refurbishments in recent cruising history, the Carnival Destiny is undergoing a $155 million transformation and a name change.

It is spending 49 days in dry-dock through next year for the changes and a name change to the Carnival Sunshine, according to EST.

The 101,353-ton, 2,642-passenger Carnival Destiny entered service in 1996 as the largest passenger ship ever built, according to Cruise Critic.

The changes include a reconfigured layout, the addition of a partial deck and the expansion of two other decks within the ship’s forward section. "These will make room for venues that either have been popular on the line’s newer vessels or are new to Carnival altogether," says Cruise Critic.

Food is only one area where major changes are expected. Restaurant additions will range from ultra-casual to more upscale.   The main dining rooms will also get an extensive overhaul from menu to décor. All cabins will be redecorated with a tropical décor that will reflect Carnival Sunshine’s Caribbean itineraries.

There will also be another 182 new staterooms in a range of styles, from spa cabins to interiors to balconies.
