Carriers beefing up schedules for Super Bowl
US airlines are adding a raft of new flights, including a number of temporary new routes to Phoenix in time for Super Bowl XLIX.
American, Delta, United, Alaska Airlines, JetBlue and Southwest have all announced extra capacity to and from Phoenix with United Airlines leading the way with an additional 55 flights.
This includes two new routes for hometown fans – Seattle to Phoenix and Boston to Phoenix.
Delta is also introducing a Boston-Phoenix flight and adding capacity with larger aircraft on its Seattle-Phoenix route.
Alaska Airlines is laying on extra flights for Seahawks fans with two more flights between Seattle and Phoenix.
The additional flights operate on January 30 and February 2.
Alaska is also launching the ‘Russell Wilson’s Fan Flight’ sweepstakes again this year, offering Mileage Plan members the chance to travel to Phoenix on a special charter, two nights’ hotel accommodations and airport transfers.
Two round trip tickets each are up for grabs to 56 prize winners in a sweepstake competition on Alaska’s Facebook page, open to all Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members who are resident in Washington, Oregon and Alaska.
"We’re thrilled to have a second opportunity to fly Russell’s fans to the big game. We invite our loyal Mileage Plan members to join us in cheering on Russell and his team as they pursue their second championship win," said Joe Sprague, senior vice president of communications and external relations for Alaska Airlines.
Although JetBlue is adding more Super Bowl flights from Boston and Manchester, NH, the carrier is also offering disinterested Arizonans an escape route with special $99 one-way fares from Phoenix to Boston on January 28-30.
