Cathay Pacific crew threaten strike action this summer
Cathay Pacific cabin crew have threatened to escalate action in a dispute with the airline’s management over the scrapping of some airline perks and wage reductions.
The Cathay Pacific Airways Flight Attendants Union vowed strike action this summer if management plans are not reversed.
"If chief executive Ivan Chu decides not to respond, we have no other choice but to start promoting the strike among members" said union head Dora Lai.
About 200 cabin crew have staged a two-day airport sit-in at Hong Kong and Lai said the union would call 6,400 members out on strike for two weeks starting on August 18 if union demands are not met.
The union is unhappy at proposed cuts to allowances and the removal of a clause in the employment contract which said Cathay Pacific would cover legal costs resulting from any incident while cabin crew are on duty,.
The union is also opposing a cut in wages for new staff and urged Cathay management to enter into further talks.
"We just want to have our company give us what we had before," Lai added.
