Cathay Pacific hands out free tickets to staff
Finding it increasingly challenging to fill aircraft, Cathay Pacific is deciding to give away free seats.
However it’s only for employees as a thank you for ‘pulling through during the challenging period’ it has been facing.
The airline has decided to reach out to employees after a testing few months which has seen labour relations plunge to arguably its lowest ebb.
There has been hostility over Cathay’s handling of the anti-government protests in Hong Kong with some sympathetic employees sacked or disciplined at the behest of Beijing.
In an internal communication the airline wrote: "In recognition of so many of you pulling through during the challenging period we are facing, this represents a meaningful saving on your leisure travel, and makes that well-earned break a real possibility."
The free flight offer will be valid until March 28, 2020, to nearly 70 destinations and is also available for nominated travel companions.
While it may boost morale it won’t improve the bottom line.
Cathay expects the downturn to continue into 2020 and has downgraded or suspended several routes across Asia, Europe and the US.
