Cathay Pacific makes more capacity cuts

Wednesday, 16 Sep, 2019 0

The sharp decline in passenger traffic on Cathay Pacific has led to more flight suspensions and capacity cuts.

Cathay’s Dublin route will be suspended from November 7. The route will then only operate during the summer season next year.

It is also suspending flights to Medan, Indonesia and daytime frequencies to Frankfurt and Paris.

A freeze on new job hires has also been introduced.

The changes follow alterations to flight schedules and capacity cuts on some long-haul routes to the US, which have already been announced.

August passenger numbers to Hong Kong were down almost 40%, mainly because of ongoing protests in the city.

Passenger demand on China routes fell more than 28% last month.

New CEO Augustus Tang Kin-wing says there is a ‘significant softening in advance bookings’  due to the protests and US-China trade war.

The airline’s reputation in mainland China has been hit hard and it could make capacity reductions there in the near future.
