Cathay says no service with a smile until demands are met
CNN reports that Cathay Pacific flight attendants have voted for taking an industrial action next week after a stalling of salary negotiations with the Hong Kong airline.
The flight attendants union is considering actions that may result in flight delays or reduced onboard service. The union will not go on an all-out strike, however, over the Christmas season.
General Secretary of the Cathay Pacific flight attendants union, Tsang Kwok-fung told CNN that members may employ a work-to-rule action. This tactic means flight attendants will follow all rules and procedures to the letter in order to delay flights. They may also use a "safety-first limited service" tactic which entails fulfilling only the basic duties required by the Civil Aviation Department.
In the latter scenario, attendants would not add "extra" non-essential services and items like nuts and alcohol – or a smile with service.
Tsang said an all out strike would not be considered until the busy Chinese New Year season in February.
The dispute is over percentages of a requested salary increase.
