Chemical leak makes dozens ill at Sydney hotel
Authorities in Australia will look at safety issues surrounding a chemical leak at a Sydney hotel which hospitalised eight people.
A further 24 needed medical assistance as part of the Pullman Sydney Hyde Park was evacuated.
A New South Wales ambulance service spokesperson said guests suffered ‘eye irritation and breathing problems"
Several fire crews were called after a strong odour was reported and guests began feeling ill.
"Someone was doing some kind of work on the pool and apparently there was a mixture of chemicals that did not mix well together," the spokesperson said.
A worker reportedly mixed hydrochloric acid and chlorine in error during maintenance work with vapour then seeping into the ventilation system.
Three floors of the hotel were then evacuated.
"There was an acute smell of chlorine in the air," hotel guest Mathias Otterstedt told Seven News.
