Chicago celebrates the year of the silk road
Silk Road Chicago, a year long, citywide celebration inspired by the art and culture of the historic Silk Road, is taking over the Windy City until June 2007. Silk Road Chicago, the creation of acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma and his Silk Road Project, is bringing hundreds of special events, concerts and exhibitions to the city throughout the year that “explore cross-cultural discovery and celebrate the artistic legacy of the historic Silk Road.” Ma chose Chicago to host the program’s first year-long collaboration, specifically for its unique representation of the interconnectedness of the world’s varying cultures.
“Chicago has a long history of being at the crossroads of the world,” said Ma. “Since the city’s founding, it has been the site of epic world’s fairs, a major transportation hub, and a meeting place for people from every corner of the globe. There is no better city for such a unique collaboration.
Chicago will be enriched by embracing the Silk Road, and the city will add another chapter to the Silk Road’s vast history.”
The project involves the collaboration of the Art Institute, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Millennium Park and an amalgam of other venues, showcasing not only the beauty and importance of the Silk Road, but also the best of what Chicago can offer to its visitors.
