China taps US expertise for national park service
China plans to finally establish an integrated national park service, with a little help from the US.
Closely following the US blueprint, which dates back 140 years ago, China wants to set up a national park system and will begin trial projects in nine provinces over the next three years.
The Chinese government has secured the services of Chicago based research center the Paulson Institute to manage the trial.
"National parks are one of the very best ideas America has exported to the world," Henry M. Paulson Jr, founder of the Institute and former US Treasury secretary, told the New York Times.
"A Chinese national park system that protects and manages the country’s ecologically rich, beautiful areas can be a source of great national pride and environmental education."
"The trick in China will be how to let the public share its natural treasures, while at the same time protecting them," Paulson added.
The Paulson Institute will provide technical support, develop park management guidelines and produce case studies of park projects in Brazil, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, Thailand and the US.
The Paulson group willworking on the project includes Doug Morris, a 40-year veteran of the United States National Park Service, who is also a member of Global Parks, a nonprofit group which advises foreign governments on national park management best practices.
"China wants to develop a national park system in line with international practices and standards, but also fitting into a Chinese context," said Rose Niu chief conservation officer at the Paulson Institute.
"As someone working on conservation issues for 20 years, I believe this is significant progress that the Chinese government is making. The Chinese government knows the Chinese public needs more and more green space and clean air."
