Authorities in Central China said 35 people died and 11 were taken to hospital after a tour bus crashed into a guardrail and burst into flames.

According to Chinese media, at least two of the dead were young children

There were 56 people on board the bus when it crashed Sunday morning on a highway in Yizhang County in Hunan.

It is thought an oil leak caused the blaze following the collision.

"It happened quickly… the bus slammed into the guardrails and then it burst into flames," a witness told local media.

Hunan police detained the bus driver for questioning but has not been officially charged with any offence.
