Chinese tourists given ‘etiquette’ manual for visiting Thailand
Chinese tourists are being given a Mandarin language Tourism Etiquette Manual by Thai officials after bad feeling over behaviour.
A number of recent incidents in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai have stoked bad feeling among Thais with a local temple temporarily banning Chinese tourists after frequent misuse of its toilet.
The manuals are being given out by tourism officials in the city of Chiang Mai as it prepares to receive up to 90,000 Chinese visitors during the Lunar New Year holidays.
It encourages tourists not to touch or deface artworks, drive more responsibly and even warns against using public property as lavatories.
Government spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd has urged Thais to be patient and courteous with Chinese visitors over the holidays.
Sansern acknowledged there were ‘undesirable’ elements when a large number of tourists converge on one place, but Thais should remain hospitable.
