Chinese urged to be thrifty on holiday
BEIJING – Don’t expect the tills to start ringing when the China’s travellers take to the roads – and the air – during the New Year holidays.
China’s top discipline authorities this week released a circular urging party members and government officials to stick to “a clean and thrifty life and work style†during the New Year holidays.
According to the circular issued by the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) and the Ministry of Supervision, various luxurious and lavish behaviors are “strictly forbidden”, and public money and other resources should be used to promote the economic development and improve people’s livelihood.
The circular urged party members and government officials to set an example by following the central government’s policies of administrative spending control by arranging holiday activities in a thrifty way and avoiding “any celebrations which have no particular reasonsâ€.
Officials and party members were also warned against using public money to send gifts, have banquets or travel.
No request, though, that party members should actually enjoy their holidays.
