Clean Breaks green holiday guide launched.

Travel and environment writers Richard Hammond and Jeremy Smith have collated a substantial selection of green holiday offers in a new book – Clean Breaks.

The authors have hand-picked their choice of hotels, tours, and activities run by people who are passionate about what they do, in an environmentally and socially responsible manner.

The 500 ‘Clean Breaks’ featured in the book – all have a claim to be unusual, alternative and incredible experiences that make a real difference to the local people and to the planet.

And, taking a Clean Break doesn’t necessarily mean sacrificing style, adventure or quality, say the authors.

As Richard and Jeremy explain, “In the same way that many of the world’s best chefs are those that use local, seasonal ingredients, it stands to reason that the most rewarding holidays are provided by those who really care for their local environment, its people, how their food is grown and the wildlife that surrounds them. These people make the best hosts and guides. Which is why Clean Breaks make the most fantastic holidays”.

Clean Breaks is organised by geographical region and includes suggestions for all pockets, from budget to luxury.

Special features in each chapter focus on regional highlights e.g. alternative winter holidays in Europe, camping in the UK, and trekking in Southeast Asia.

Readers can also learn how to go green in certain cities throughout the world –including, unexpectedly, Tokyo and Mumbai.

A comprehensive resources section provides listings for helpful websites and organisations for trip planning, including transport options, details of ethical tour operators and how to link up with couch surfers, local guides and “greeters”

  • Accommodation listings include: bothies and barns in Britain,  houseboats in Kerala, mud huts in Jamaica, ecolodges in Ecuador
  • Wildlife listings include: whale-watching off Ireland, track wolves and bears in Poland, witness the zebra migration in Botswana
  • Climate-friendly travel: the train-hotel from Paris to Madrid,  ferry-hopping across the Mediterranean,  cargo-boat travel around the world
  • Live with the locals offers: camp with the Bedouin,  stay in tipis with Native American Indians,  trek with nomads in Mongolia
  • Extraordinary experiences: kayak around the Scottish Isles,  go reindeer-sledding in Norway,  hear the music of the desert in Mali
