Club Med, from sand huts to swank

Monday, 03 Feb, 2010 0

SYDNEY – Club Med is turning 60 and for the next 60 days is offering 60 percent off the second person’s booking.

“This is probably closer to the prices that were on offer when the Club Med launched the concept in the 1950s,” said a spokeswoman for the company.

The first Club Med resort opened in 1950 on the Spanish resort island of Mallorca. Accommodation was simple sand huts, and the club’s basic philosophy was that a single fee should entitle you to a holiday, with no hidden extras.

Club Med is now in more than 80 destinations worldwide

The 60th birthday packages are for sale from now until March 31, open for all ages, with a minimum stay of seven nights at Club Med’s resorts in Bali, Phuket, Bintan, Cherating, Kani (Maldives), and a minimum of five nights at La Pointe and Albion (Mauritius), and a minimum of six nights at Lindeman Island in the Whitsundays

Eligible travel is from until January 31, 2011. Black out dates apply.

Coming in 2010, Cherating Beach in Malaysia will be the first Club Med to introduce the Eco Nature Resort.

Kani in the Maldives is introducing a dedicated 5 Trident space for guests who enjoy luxury, personal service, premium amenities, quiet and privacy while still enjoying the spirit of a Club Med vacation.

Bintan Island is set to introduce a new spa, and Yabuli Ski Resort, Club Med’s first Chinese Resort, will open this year. Located in the north east of China, Yabuli is the country’s leading ski resort.
