Coast Guard calls off search after HAL ship overboard
The U.S. Coast Guard this week halted an air and sea search for a 77-year-old woman who went overboard from a cruise ship.
The overboard incident happened near Cuba on New Year’s Day.
Search and rescue crews searched a huge area spanning nearly 700 square miles, without success the Coast Guard said.
The woman went overboard about 40 miles off the Cuba coastline.
She was a guest on Holland America Line ship Nieuw Statendam.
Details about how the woman went overboard have not been disclosed.
The Coast Guard had helicopters and a large cutter ship involved in the search for several hours.
“Our family assistance team is supporting the guest’s family, and our thoughts are with the guest’s loved ones,” Holland America Line said.
The ship left Fort Lauderdale, Florida on a week-long New Year cruise in the eastern Caribbean.
