Collapsed New Orleans Hard Rock Hotel set to be demolished

Thursday, 27 Nov, 2019 0

The site of the collapsed Hard Rock Hotel in New Orleans will be fully demolished but it wont be done by a controlled implosion.

The collapse killed three workers but only one body has so far been retrieved.

Emergency services officials say recovery attemps of the other two have so far been deemed unsafe.

The developer filed an application for the demolition permit but won’t use explosives to clear the site.

Experts advised developer 1031 Canal Development that an implosion could endanger the surrounding area beyond the current safety perimeter.

"Minimizing further disruptions to the residents and businesses in the immediate area as well as across the CBD and French Quarter remains a top priority," the filing said.

The company said a conventional demolition would allow salvage of some materials and be more dignified for removing the two bodies that remain in the collapsed building.

New Orleans fire chief Tim McConnel said: "The area that was going to be affected (by an implosion) was not really acceptable. It’s going to affect too many of the other buildings around it. Remember, we’re in the Historic French Quarter here. So they chose not to go forward with that plan,"

McConnell reckons a conventional demolition could last about six months.

It will likely happen from early next year if approved by the city.
