Cars, trucks and buses are now being screened for explosives and contraband hidden underneath the vehicles in a pilot program at Atlantic City International Airport, officials announced.
Airport officials said the new technology is the first of its kind in the nation. The system captures a video image of the underside of vehicles as they enter the airport property.
It uses a 4-inch-high ramp equipped with a series of cameras and lights that transmit an image of the undercarriage of the vehicle to a security screen located in a mobile vehicle parked nearby.
“This equipment gives law enforcement officers another tool to use in the fight against terrorism and helps us to ensure a safe flying environment for the traveling public,” said state Transportation Commissioner Kris Kolluri.
