Concern over discovery of surface-to-air missiles
Security at Saudi Arabian airports has reportedly been increased after a consignment of surface-to-air missiles capable of bringing down airliners was discovered near Jeddah.
The BBC today reports that the lorry-load of missiles was destined for an unnamed terror group and was almost certainly brought in to the country from Yemen. British Airways has reportedly confirmed that while security measures at Riyadh and Jeddah have been stepped up, it will not be reinstating flights to Saudi at present.
The online news provider Ananova quotes a spokesman for the airline thus: “We are reviewing the situation on a daily basis. We have been undertaking a thorough review of security arrangements in Riyadh and Jeddah in full co-operation with the UK’s Department for Transport and Saudi authorities. As a result of that review, additionally robust security measures are in place – but our flights remain suspended.”
