Cop charged with gun smuggling through Miami Airport
A Miami police officer has made a first court appearance charged with smuggling guns through Miami International Airport.
Michael Freshko, 48, used his position at the airport to bypass screening and pass on the firearms to an associate who then took them to the Dominican Republic inside hand baggage.
He was charged in federal court with conspiracy to illegally export firearms.
Prosecutors say six firearms were smuggled on two occasions in 2012 – four Glock 9mm pistols, one Sig Sauer 9mm pistol and one Sig Sauer 5.65-caliber rifle.
Freshko could face five years behind bars if found guilty.
