Could your destination be in the world top 100?
Sustainable Destinations Top 100 competition "Destinations of Future Generations" to be launched at ITB
Green Destinations, TravelMole VISION for Sustainable Tourism and the Destination Stewardship Centre will launch the competition for the next Sustainable Destinations Top 100 at ITB Berlin 2016,
The launch will take place at ITB – the world’s biggest travel market – on the Adventure Stage, Hall 4.1b, on Thursday 10 March at 17.30
The award is then set to be the most climate-friendly ever. Awards will be presented by video conferencing from Europe’s Green Capital 2016 – Ljubljana – as part of World Green Destination Day.
The Sustainable Destinations Top 100 is the follow-up to National Geographic Traveler’s Destination Stewardship surveys (2004-2010) and the 2014 Sustainable Destinations Global Top 100.
The overall theme of the Top 100 Awards is "destinations of future generations".
Award candidates are destinations that cherish and celebrate their Authenticity, their Biodiversity, their Cultural values, the Destination’s local community and entrepreneurs, and their Environment, for future generations of citizens and travellers.
The competition will start with open nominations on social media by experts, and by destination leaders. Nominations will be eligible if they include a sustainability pitch illustrated through 5 pictures, or a short video, and a brief clarification how the destination complies with 15 criteria from the Green Destinations Standard.
Destinations that are already certified under this global sustainability standard will automatically be included in the Top 100.
Experienced experts will evaluate the sustainability pitch and the information submitted on the nominated destinations. After the check and validation, nominated destinations will be selected through a public vote among the readers of partner media and sponsors.
The results of the competition will be announced during Global Green Destinations Day, 7-8 September 2016 in Ljubljana (Slovenia), a city that kept its historic core attractive and well preserved, and was elected by the European Union as European Green Capital 2016.
During these days, the awarded destinations around the world will celebrate their selection. Top 100 Ambassadors will present the Destination Awards to destination management officials through video conferencing. This makes this tourism award series the most climate friendly ever, not forcing all award winners to travel around the globe.
