Crowds flock to Jakarta’s Ancol Dreamland park despite crocodile sighting
Police in Jakarta beefed up their presence on and near the beaches of the city’s top theme park after a crocodile was sighted.
The reptile was sighted under a dock at Ancol Dreamland Park in North Jakarta.
The head of the Security Maintenance Agency’s rescue division, Comr. Faried said officers have been searching for the croc for the last few days since the sighting as thousands flocked to the park during national Idul Fitri holidays.
Shortly after the sighting a crew member on a Navy boat reportedly sighted and then shot the croc but it was still unclear whether it was a fatal hit.
Faried said the focus has been on ensuring the safety of holidaymakers rather than disrupting large crowds of visitors.
"We are focusing on keeping the residents safe since it is quite challenging to look for the crocodile," Faried said.
About 60,000 were estimated in the park on the first day of the holidays.
Faried said police and navy boats are patrolling the Jakarta Bay coastline and around the offshore Seribu Islands resorts.
