Cruise lines shift ports after European anti-austerity strikes
In the wake of massive European anti-austerity strikes, several large cruise lines changed ports of call yesterday to avoid disruption.
USA Today reports that Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas skipped docking in Lisbon, Portugal and instead docked at Lanzarote, Spain. Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Constellation did not dock at Vigo, Spain but remained at sea.
Cruise passengers had similar shifts in ports of call during Hurricane Sandy. Most cruise lines attempt to offer passengers compensation for loss of ports in the form of extra days at alternative ports, at sea or credits towards future cruises.
