Cruise passenger kills mugger with bare hands
A Carnival Cruise Line passenger has killed a mugger with his bare hands after fighting him off and putting him in a headlock.
It happened after a gang of young men, yielding knives and a gun, attempted to rob a group of passengers as they stepped off a tour bus during an excursion near San Jose, Costa Rica.
The passengers defended themselves and one man, reported to be a 70-year-old retired US military officer, held one of the robbers in a headlock, according to news agency AP.
Police said the 20-year-old was later declared dead from asphyxiation and the group were allowed to return to the ship, Carnival Liberty, without charge.
Police chief Luis Hernandez said: “They were right to defend themselves after being held up.”
