Cruise ship changes as Hurricane Erin intensifies
Cruise ships have changed course in the Caribbean as Hurricane Erin threatens to develop into a major storm this weekend.
Erin was producing winds of about 70 mph as of Friday morning and could strengthen steadily, the National Hurricane Center says.
The NHC has placed a Tropical Storm Watch on the region including Anguilla and Barbuda, St. Martin and St. Barts.
Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas skipped the scheduled two nights in Bermuda this week and called at Port Canaveral instead.
Guests have been informed of changes to Disney Treasure’s departure out of Florida on Saturday.
Calls at Tortola and St. Thomas have been canceled and replaced with Cozumel, George Town, and Falmouth.
Disney Cruise Line said there could be other revisions to the itinerary as the Hurricane nears over the next two days.
Erin will become the Atlantic season’s first hurricane and will likely intensify quickly over the weekend.
It is not expected to make have a major impact on the US southeast but could heavily affect Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
It could become a Category 3 hurricane by Saturday evening.
