Cruise ship re-routes after passengers and crew fall ill

A Royal Caribbean cruise ship has skipped a planned stop to undergo ‘extensive santising’ after more than 300 on board fell ill.

The Explorer of the Seas was re-routed to Puerto Rico, missing a planned stop in Haiti, after 281 passengers and 22 crew showed symptoms.

Health officials announced on Friday that more than 300 people aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship had become ill, forcing the company to cut the Caribbean cruise short in order to sanitise the boat.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a press release announcing that 281 of the ship’s 3,050 passengers reported vomiting and having diarrhoea, reports the Daily Mail.

In a statement to CNN, Royal Caribbean International said that those who had fallen ill had responded well to over-the-counter medication they were given aboard the ship.

Janet Diaz, a Royal Caribbean spokesperson, said cleaning products designed to kill norovirus were being used to sanitise the ship.

According to the CDC, the ship will head to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, on Sunday, where health officials will conduct an investigation, a health assessment and evaluate the crew’s response to the outbreak.

The boat set sail from Cape Liberty, New Jersey, on January 21. It is scheduled to make stops in St. Thomas and St. Maarten.

Last week, dozens of passengers fell ill on the Royal Caribbean’s Majesty of the Seas with a gastrointestinal condition, causing diarrhoea or vomiting during the four-night Caribbean cruise.
